There has been a lot of talk lately around the internet about the safety of e-juice. This comes as no surprise seeing as e-cigarettes have been putting a major dent in big tobacco sales. It was only a matter of time before someone didn’t take kindly to their profits being cut into and decided to strike against the E-cig industry in some way, but it has caused a bit of confusion, especially for people who aren’t too knowledgeable about the world of e-cigs, so Vapesterdam is here to help clear up some of that confusion and break down what makes e-juice what it is!

E-Juice Ingredients

E-juice would be pretty boring without flavor. The flavor helps make the vaping experience either closer to what former smokers know and love or just more appealing to those who want something they can enjoy here and there when they vape. The flavoring is more often than not food grade flavorings that are typically used for baking or candy making. The mixing of flavors is what creates those signature flavors from certain e-juice makers.

Otherwise known as PG, this is one of the main ingredients of e-juice. It’s a solvent used as a medium for the other ingredients sometimes in conjunction with vegetable glycerin. Some people might recognize this as the substance used in fog machines. Because it’s odorless and flavorless, it doesn’t alter the flavor in the e-juice. It’s also pretty thin and as such, absorbs more quickly into wicks in vapes than juices with higher VG concentrations. Vaping regularly with this can give you a dry mouth and in some cases it can even cause an allergic reaction. This can be easily avoided by picking a juice that uses only 100% vegetable glycerin.

Vegetable Glycerin or VG is a much thicker liquid than PG, so it will take more time to absorb into your vape’s wick. It’s sometimes referred to as Glycerol and is actually used as a sweetener, preservative and is even used as filler for cookies sometimes! You’ve probably eaten it without even noticing you did. It does have a natural flavor and sweetness which means the taste of the added flavoring will be altered when it meets with the VG.  That being said, it produces much thicker clouds, which is why cloud chasers love it, and it doesn’t have a history of causing allergic reactions. It has a much softer feel on the throat, but some do report feeling phlegm in their throat after vaping it for a while.

Nicotine

This one isn’t always included, but when it’s included, it is in varying concentrations based on the buyer’s needs. This is the addictive substance keeping smokers from being able to quit. Depending on how much you smoked in the past, you may need a higher or lower concentration of nicotine to satisfy your cravings, but you can wean yourself off slowly over time to a much lower concentration or even none with the right approach!

Distilled Water

Distilled water is sometimes used to dilute the mix a bit to make it easier for the liquid to be wicked up.

Contrary to what some might want you to believe, the ingredients aren’t a concoction of poisons like what you’d find in the most analog cigarettes. Is it possible that a maker could put something harmful in their e-liquid? Yes. For that reason, it’s always good to do your research before purchasing your juice. Know who’s making it and how seriously they take quality control and safety. As this industry grows, more and more reliable companies will pop up, but for now, take care to find good quality juice so you can be as safe as possible when you vape.
