Hello and welcome to another vapsterdam review. Today we’re tackling another piece of glass by Grav Labs. This piece is called the Upline, and it’s got a bit of a cult following. The structure comes in multiple sizes, but we’re taking a look at the 17 inch version today. This piece is a complicated piece of art designed to be seen. It’s definitely a show piece, which always brings to mind a particular set of concerns: is it worth the money? Is the quality level where it should be? Show pieces also come with a very particular set of issues related to cleaning and maintenance. With these things in mind, let’s take a look at this piece and see if it meets our high standards for excellence.

Product Pros

  1. Very attractive
  2. Incredible hits
  3. Unique styling

Product Cons

  1. Difficult to maintain
  2. Difficult to clean

Grav Upline Review: Breakdown

Quality

Build Quality

Build Quality

This water pipe is a complicated piece, meaning that it’s even more important that the build be high quality. This piece definitely hits all the marks that a quality water pipe should. It’s stable when settled, though I wouldn’t dream of filling this up and letting it sit. This is a piece that gets disassembled and reassembled every time. Lazy smokers need not apply.

That being said the glass is a little thinner than I would expect for the money. I was also surprised to find that this piece is definitely the result of multiple pieces of glass being fused together. This is a time-tested way to make a large piece, and many quality pieces are composed in this manner.

That being said, this build process creates weak spots in the piece by its vary nature. I can’t tell you if you’re going to break this piece, but if you’re going to break this piece, I can definitely tell you where you’re going to break it.

Smoke Quality

Smoke Quality

The smoke quality of this piece is insane. It really reminds you why Grav Labs has the reputation that they do. Filling the chamber requires surprisingly little lung power. Instead, a light draw is best in order to ensure a steady stream of smoke filters up through all of the percs.

Once the chamber is full of smoke, another light draw pulls huge clouds of smoke into your lungs with the particular “upline roar” that fans are fond of. It’s definitely not subtle. This is not the piece you pull out to smoke with your friends who occasionally indulge. This kind of glass is meant to be shared among those who brag about their smoking capabilities. This kind of glass is for people who hold deeply thought-out opinions regarding the best brand of eye drops.

look-and-feel

Look and Feel

This piece looks more delicate than it is. That’s not saying very much, of course, because this piece looks incredibly delicate. I spent all of my time with it worried that I (or one of my lovably clumsy friends) was going to break it during a coughing fit. The piece is taller than you’d anticipate, and the tube is surprisingly thin. I was impressed by the sturdy base as well as the well formed mouth piece.

Only a madman would consider passing this piece around. Load your bowl, set it on a table, and let your friends approach when they’ve gathered their nerve. This piece is definitely built for occasions when you’re looking to slow the conversation and just genuinely focus on your smoking experience. This isn’t the sort of thing built to share with everyone, but it’s going to give a pleasantly memorable smoking experience to those you trust enough to share it with.

Ease of Maintenance

Ease of Maintenance

Cleaning this piece is an absolute nightmare. I can honestly say that I have never experienced a more complicated, nerve-wracking, miserable cleaning experience. For starters, this piece requires extensive maintenance in that it must always be disassembled.

You must pick a spot where this piece goes, and it must be broken down and carefully placed there after every use. If you do not do this, you are going to break this glass. In addition to the constant babysitting, it requires a (seemingly) unworkable amount of labor in order to keep it at the level of clean that I insist my pieces stay at.

Conclusion

This is a beautiful piece for the collectors among us. If you have space in your collection (and your life) for a high-maintenance piece, this is definitely one worth considering. Pieces like this are not meant to be easy. They are difficult to clean and difficult to own, but so are Ferraris, and people certainly buy them. This is a show piece, and if you have room in your collection for such a tedious piece, this is an exciting option. If you’re just looking for a daily driver to pull out when you’ve finished your work for the day, keep looking. I assure you, this isn’t it and we would urge you to check out the Jane West Beaker or HiSi Hexagon Review.
