I’m not talking about putting your hand too close to the heating chamber; I’m talking about the Evolve-D, Yocan’s latest evolution of their Evolve design. The original Evolve (and its expansion, the Evolve Plus) have been fairly decent enough wax devices, but the Evolve-D flies a bit too close to the sun. This is a prime example of a popular “vape burner” type of pen. These are designed to be super cheap and convenient for people not looking to spend a bunch of dough on their herbal treatment. However, this will not be good for people who actually want to vaporize their herb, so definitely be warned before going any further. The battery is an outer ego-thread style with inner 510 threading and will work with other devices with compatible threading. There’s a pancake-style dual coil atomizer for dry herb, with a 650mAh battery running between 3.2v to 4.2v and generating approximately between 1.3 and 3.0 ohms. The power button is made from chrome, as is the bottom of the device, and the chamber is nice and big with a wide circumference for loading; this gives the impression of having at least some pleasing elements of build quality for the Evolve-D. Vapor Quality Vapor quality is not really tops with the Evolve-D; expect some pretty harsh hits and do not be surprised if you’re coughing and choking. Take long and slow draws at first, at least until your throat starts roasting. You’ll be able to get a fair degree of cloudiness, but this will be due more to smoke than to vapor. There isn’t even any variable voltage, which means we can’t really customize our sessions at all. While quartz is usually pretty decent for flavor retention, the Evolve-D gives off basically no flavor. As opposed to actual vaporizers which are all about flavor, the Evolve-D style of burner is just for big, rough tokes and not much else. Design Look and Feel At barely 5 and ¾ inches long, the Evolve is one of the smaller vape-style pens available on the market. The Evolve-D is slightly longer than the original Evolve due to the tamping mechanism on the mouthpiece, but is otherwise fairly simple. The general design is stylish, and it’s available in silver, black, red, blue, and orange. It may not look or feel as stylish or sturdy as other pen vapes (like the slick KandyPens models), but is a pleasing enough construction. Discreetness The shape and size of the Evolve-D make it a natural for discreetness, but unfortunately this is totally ruined by how big and odorous your clouds will be. The E-cig style build keeps it pretty stealthy, so people won’t necessarily know it’s an herbal device you have with you, but the sight and the smell of the clouds makes it much less conspicuous than other legit vaporizers. Ease of Use The one-button design of the Evolve-D makes it fair for general use. As with most one-button herb devices, 5 quick clicks turns it on, and another 5 turns it off. The filtration holes are small but are still pretty easy to clean Once loaded, give a few light tamps from the mouthpiece cap to ensure a thorough conduction can occur within the heating chamber. Don’t pack so tight you won’t be able to get any airflow; packing the Evolve-D too hard will definitely affect airflow and your draws will be much more limited. The coil is concentrated in the middle, so it will cook the herb from this point. The edges won’t cook as well, so this cleaning/tamping function in the mouthpiece is definitely handy for keeping the herb fresh through the session. Give tamps lightly as you don’t want to potentially bust the coils, but you can tamp it after every hit to get just a little bit more from each toke. Portability The Evolve-D is shaped and sized decent enough for the portability expectations, with the device fitting reasonably in a pocket or bag and can handle a bit of a toss-around without completely falling apart. Standard operation should get 3-6 hours of use from the battery; there’s no pass-through charging, unfortunately, so you’ll have to unplug the 510 thread for charging capability. Make sure to use the Evolve-D somewhere with decent ventilation, as things will quickly get cloudy. Conclusion Overall, the Evolve-D is only really a strong device for people with little-to-no interest in actual vaporizing, but still want the portability and convenience of a vape pen. “Mega-toke” style burners like this sort of tread the line between pipes, vaporizers, and wax pens. It’s decent for on-the-go smoking cuz you won’t have to bust out a lighter and pipe, but there’s a lot of other devices which are just as convenient and can give you some actual vapor The Pancake-style coil will burn the herb rather than straight vaporizing, making the Yocan Evolve-D vaporizer actually a dry-herb pen via combustion. It cherries the herb quickly, like a car lighter. If you’re looking for a pen-style vape which won’t totally burn the botanical, something like the KandyPens Elite if you’re looking for wax, or even something basic like the V2 Pro Series 3 can give you more ease and functionality.
