Continuing our trend of pitting the stealthiest, most popular vaporizers against each other, check out this clash of the titans. Pax has become almost synonymous with portable vaping in recent years, while the Firefly 2 is hot on its tails with a similarly sophisticated build.  The recent release of the Pax 3 integrates Bluetooth technology to help control temperatures, which is also a major selling feature of the Firefly 2.

The Pax uses conduction heating to generate quick results, but the Firefly 2 uses convection to create the tastiest vapor. Both units pack big punches in small packages, but which of these tiny little beasts makes the biggest impact?

Vapor Quality

Firefly 2

On-demand convection heating from the Firefly 2 gives you some of the best-tasting vapor available, and the glass vapor path ensures you’re not losing any flavor along the way. The convection heating also uses herbs more sparingly as they are only being cooked when the user takes a draw. Seeing as the Pax 3 is so wildly popular without necessarily having the best vapor around, I’ll give this round to the Firefly 2.

Pax 3

Vapor quality remains as consistent and pleasing as ever with the Pax 3, if not particularly revolutionary. Normally, we would be more inclined to rank the Pax 3 as a stronger contender in the portable vape scene, but it is truly difficult to compete with the improved Firefly 2. As well, both the Pax 2 & 3 use conduction heating; keep in mind how herbs will cook even when the unit is not being drawn from.

 Build Quality

Firefly 2

The Firefly 2 always stays in standby mode so you don’t have to worry about turning the device on or off. However, the mobile application must be used to control the temperature, so unless you know and have set your preferred temperature already, the Firefly becomes less discreet to handle. Be prepared to stay anchored to your mobile even more so than usual.

Pax 3

The Paxes are known for being terrifically well-made devices, and the third generation is no exception. However, despite the positive reputation Pax has for their device design and handling, we’re going to give this round to the Firefly 2 for really blowing us away with their overall operating system and design. As well, note the magnetic cap on the bottom of the device, which always makes us a little nervous about coming loose and dropping herb all over the dang place.

Portability

Firefly 2

The Firefly 2 has been significantly sized down from previous models, but as slight as it is, it still cannot quite compete with the famously tiny Pax models. This is not to say the Firefly doesn’t have its portable benefits. The removable battery of the Firefly 2 is a major feature, as it allows for a greater number of sessions on the go, as well as more convenient serviceability in case of battery failure.

Pax 3

However, this is Pax we’re talking about here. King of the tiny vapes. No contest. The Pax 2 and 3 also both have good battery life, with the 2 reaching approximately an hour’s worth of use, and the 3 expanding this to almost 90 minutes. User should note how the Pax uses a built-in battery, so if there is a battery failure then the unit will have to be sent back to the manufacturer to have it fixed or replaced.

Discreetness

Pax 3

The Pax has been a leader in low-key vaporization ever since their emergence, perhaps most famously as being used frequently in the streets of NYC by the stealthy stoner Illana Glazer on the television comedy Broad City. The svelte shape and easy grip have made it an easy favorite for vapers on the go. While the Firefly 2 has a nicely convert shape to the device itself, the smartphone-controlled temperature adjustment feature is less discreet than we would care for.

Firefly 2 Top View Winner: Firefly 2 For the most portable vaping satisfaction in this realm, it is hard not to give it up to the Pax. The Pax 2 has been the go-to model for years in regards to vaping on the go, and the Pax 3 is welcome upgrade to the brand. However, due to how terrific the vapor production is, as well as the all-around manufacturing quality and removable batteries, the Firefly 2 is perhaps just a cut above any of the Paxes so far.

While either one of these vapes is likely to be a hit, determining your needs and matching them with our review specs here will get you the best results. For portability, go Pax; but for the best overall session, you may never go back from the Firefly.

As always, thanks so much for reading our Showdown review of the Firefly 2 vs the Pax 3. Do you agree with our assessment? Let us know in the comments below!
