Today we’ve got a head to head comparison of two excellent concentrate vapes, the ZEUS Thunder 2 and the Pulsar APX Wax. They’ve both been known to surprise first-time users with their performance, and they’re both concentrate-only devices. The Thunder 2 has a pen-style design, while the APX Wax is a very tiny box mod and atomizer combo…

They’re both good, but that’s not what we’re here to find out. We want to know which one comes out on top!

Vapor Quality

Thunder 2

Coils have long been the go to heating style for atomizers, but the Thunder 2 utilizes a newer style: a ceramic dish. The two big benefits that you get from a ceramic dish are improved flavor and more even heating.

This leads to a very impressive performance as far as vapor goes for the Thunder 2. The flavor is excellent and you are also able to get pretty big clouds if you want. You don’t get a ton of flexibility considering there is only one atomizer style and you can’t change the temperature, but the bottom line is that it’s still calibrated to deliver a great experience.

Pulsar APX Wax

Unlike the Thunder 2, the APX Wax relies on coils to distribute the heat. This isn’t a bad way of doing things, just not as good as the ceramic dish in terms of flavor preservation. On the plus side, there are three quartz coils packed into the atomizer.

In case you don’t know, having three coils means that this thing is able to put off some big clouds. Much bigger than you would expect from such a small device. Unfortunately, the ability to deliver big clouds comes at the expense of flavor in our opinion. Like the Thunder 2, you don’t get any temperature flexibility with this unit.

Build Quality

Thunder 2

Pen-style vapes have a reputation for being cheaply made. A lot of people look at them and think of the units you get at gas stations when you are in a pinch or don’t have money for a ‘real’ unit. If you think like that, get ready to be wrong about the Thunder 2.

The Thunder 2 lives up to it’s billing as a ‘premium’ pen-style vaporizer. While many pen vapes are made out of cheap plastic, the entire body of this is made from metal. The heating element, as mentioned above, is a ceramic dish, and the rest of the vapor pathway is glass and stainless steel.

The one thing that leaves room for improvement is the battery size. At 650mAh, it’s at the bottom of what’s acceptable. Fortunately, the Thunder 2 manages to squeeze a lot of use out of the small battery.

Pulsar APX Wax

The APX Wax also defies expectations. You can’t help but to look at it and it’s tiny size and assume it’s a cheap unit. But once you actually get your hands on it try it out, you’ll immediately see that Pulsar did a good job making this unit sturdy and durable.

The exterior is made from aluminum, and the heating chamber is entirely quartz. They even managed to fit a 1100mAh battery inside. Considering this vape is only 3.5” tall, that’s pretty impressive.

While the Thunder 2 wins in this category, the APX Wax still put in a very strong showing.

Portability

Thunder 2

Pen-style vapes are notoriously portable, and the fact that the Thunder 2 is so well made only makes it more so. On top of the durable construction, the design makes it easy to slip into a pocket and carry around without it being a hinderance.

The only downside is the battery. As mentioned above, the Thunder 2 manages to make the most of a limited situation. You should still be able to get a full day of use out of this. But imagine what would be possible if this were powered by a bigger battery.

Pulsar APX Wax

The measurements of the APX Wax are 3.5” tall by 1.5” wide. It’s hard to appreciate how small that actually is until you hold it in your hand. With the atomizer on, the entire thing can be concealed in your fist! Obviously, this is very easy to carry.

Again, we talked about this above, but when you consider the overall size of the unit, the 1100mAh battery is a notable achievement. This was another very close category, but the APX Wax narrowly takes it this time.

Discreetness

Thunder 2

The Thunder 2 offers a huge advantage over many vapes simply because of it’s shape. The pen-style design is so similar to such a wide variety of objects – including pens – that it easily goes unnoticed by people passing by.

With the setup more designed for producing great tasting vapor than huge clouds, you’ll also have an easier time keeping your cloud output at a reasonable level.

Pulsar APX Wax

The overall size of the APX Wax is a huge plus in this department, but the shape is also more eye-catching. So you can keep it hidden easily, but people are also more likely to notice it if it’s visible.

Also worth noting is the fact that this has a 5-second heat up time. It’s pretty easy to imagine a situation where quickly taking a draw would be an advantage as far discretion is concerned. You’ll have a harder time keeping cloud size small with this one though.

Winner: Thunder 2

The Pulsar APX Wax put in a very impressive showing, especially considering the price, but the Thunder 2 is still the obviously better vaporizer. Both of these are great options for beginners, but Thunder 2 delivers better vapor quality and the package seems more elegant.

There is a price difference to consider as well. If you find yourself with limited funds and can’t afford to invest in anything more than an APX Wax, you can rest easy knowing that you’re still going to be getting a very good vaporizer.

If you do have the money to spend, upgrading to the Thunder 2 makes a lot of sense. The vapor is very flavorful and smooth, which is ideal for anyone who plans to use their unit a lot.

Do you agree with our assessment? As usual, let us know in the comments…
