It’s been a while since we have done a “Versus” post, but with the launch of the Utillian 720, a lot of people will be drawing comparisons between it and the Crafty. With almost $200 in price difference we thought we would take a closer look at these 2 units and see how they stack up against each other and determine which ultimately holds the most value. It’s the Utillian 720 vs Crafty: Vapor Quality Utillian 720 The Utillian 720 features a large stainless steel convection heating chamber which is exposed by removing the magnetic mouthpiece cap. Because this unit incorporates convection heating, vapor quality is smooth and flavorful at almost any temperature. We loved that the Utillian 720 gave us nice dense visible clouds. Unlike the Crafty, the cap of the 720 is not a cooling unit, your air pathway simply goes from the heating chamber to the mouthpiece. We did not find much issue with hot vapor unless using the highest heat setting at which point the vapor does become a little harsh. But some users enjoy harsher thicker vapor and won’t have issue using it at the max temperature. Overall we are very impressed with the vapor we get from this device and it compares very close to the standard set by the Crafty. However it is lacking a cooling component which can lead to harsher draws at higher temperatures for some users. Crafty The Crafty has been a leader in vapor quality for some time. This unit was the first portable to incorporate convection heating and has gained much fanfare because of the great vapor quality. There is no denying that draws from the Crafty are smooth and flavorful from start to finish with an abundance of visible vapor. The cooling system that is built into the crafty’s mouthpiece helps provide smooth vapor no matter the heat setting. Even at the highest setting the cooling unit works extremely well to ensure a smooth hit. Vapor Quality Winner: Crafty Build Quality Utillian 720 Utillian has had a good track record so far, their Utillian 650 and 651 have had very little defect issues and seem to lasts users quite a long time without requiring any type of warranty service. We expect that the 720 will meet the same standards of high quality control. The body of the unit is made of anodized aluminum with a rubberized finish which makes the device feel rugged. The cap of the Utillian is made out of thick plastic and locks onto the unit with a magnet making the chance of breaking the locking mechanism very difficult. Overall I would have more confidence that this unit would survive a drop over the Crafty. Crafty The Crafty has a bit of a bad reputation when it comes to manufacturing quality. Just google “Crafty issues” and you will find a whole host of forums with unhappy customers who have had their very expensive unit die all too soon. Couple this with an entirely plastic shell and the crafty leaves a lot to be desired from a manufacturing standpoint. From experience I have seen friends who have dropped their Crafty and have the plastic locking hinge on the device snap off requiring the whole unit to be replaced. Now some people may say, “well you should be more careful with such an expensive unit” and while that’s true, mistakes do happen and personally I would not want a small accident like a drop to render my device useless. Build Quality Winner: Utillian 720 Portability Utillian 720 It’s no secret that the Utillian 720 looks very similar to the Crafty, the devices are almost the exact same size. So when it comes to portability from a size perspective it is basically a tie. However the Utillian 720 in our tests has shown about 90 minutes of battery life and we got about 6 sessions in total out of 1 battery charge. This really makes the Utillian an excellent go to unit those who use their units on a daily basis away from home and a charger. We easily got through an entire day of vaping without the need to charge the unit until the end of the day. As well the 720 has a decent battery indicator located at the bottom of the device, just check it every so often to have an idea of how much charge Crafty The Crafty’s battery life is probably the biggest draw back to the device and is a main reason why many choose to pay a little extra for its bigger brother the Mighty. From experience my Crafty lasts me 3 full sessions or rougly 45 minutes and if one of my initial sessions is a little longer than chances are my 3rd session will be cut short. So needless to say with such a short battery life this device will have you running to a wall outlet midday making it not the most portable unit in the world. Portability Winner: Utillian 720 Temperature Flexibility Utillian 720 The Utillian 720 comes with 4 base pre-set temperatures; 170c, 180c, 190c, 210c which is a pretty decent range of temperatures to begin with. However the temperature settings can be expanded with what Utillian calls its “Enhanced Mode” which bumps each temperature up by 5 degrees. This effectively gives the unit 8 total temperatures which is one of the widest ranges available on the market without being precise temperature controlled. This allows each user to determine their own “sweet spot”, personally I liked the purple setting, which is the 190 celcius and then I would “enhance” it to 195 to get the last few draws off the unit. For those who enjoy thicker vapor you can go right to the highest setting and for those who prefer more flavor, the lowest setting provides very smooth whispy flavorful vapor. Crafty Depending on how you use your Crafty will determine how many temperature settings are available to you. The Crafty comes pre-set with 2 temperature settings 180c and 195c however these temperatures can be adjusted with the use of the Crafty smartphone app. This requires connecting your vaporizer to your phone via bluetooth to control the temperature to the individual degree or set your own 2 temperature settings. Once you have set your own desired temperatures you can switch between them without the app. So with the Crafty app the unit technically has precise temperature control however I rarely found myself using the app and I would argue most users won’t. Which effectively means the unit really limits you to 2 pre-set temperature settings. Temperature Flexibility Winner: Utillian 720 Winner: Utillian 720 It was a close bout and the Crafty is still the reigning champion when it comes to vapor quality, if this is your main concern and you have the extra funds you should not hesitate in getting yourself a Crafty, it is an amazing unit. However when it comes to overall value and functionality we have to give the slight edge to the Utillian 720. With the Crafty being nearly double the price of the 720 with such minimal differences between the 2 and some categories being edged out by the 720, it is hard not to recommend the Utillian 720 over the Crafty for the price conscience consumer. For most, the extra $200 won’t warrant the slight bump in vapor quality the Crafty offers and the lack of battery life and plastic exterior make the 720 a more viable option for the average user. You can grab both the Utillian 720 and the Crafty directly from Vaporizera where orders are tax free and they have free shipping over $100.
