Today we’re taking a look at a piece crafted by some of the oldest names in the game. The Cheech and Chong Pedro Mini Beaker is one of the small, multi-featured water pipes which are currently flooding the market. This style tends to have one or two features you’d expect in a larger waterpipe, but with a small, more travel friendly profile. There’s an endless supply of this style and it seems more come out everyday, so you want to make sure to get your money’s worth when you make the purchase. Cheech and Chong are great, but let’s take a look at this piece and see if it lives up to the hype.

Product Pros

  1. Attractive
  2. Small chamber
  3. Showerhead diffused downstem

Product Cons

  1. Hard to clean
  2. Thin glass

Cheech and Chong Pedro Mini Beaker Review: Breakdown

Build Quality

Build Quality

The build quality on this thing is high quality, but not the best that you can get for your money. The glass isn’t nearly as thick as I would expect for the price point.

I am always surprised to find a fixed downstem with a piece this small. It’s a great smoking experience at first, but the difficult cleaning process pretty much ensures that you’re never going to get hits as good as those first few.

Despite the thin glass, the quality level is definitely there. The roll stop feature on the bowl is the sort of thing you don’t realize you need until it isn’t there. Likewise, the heavy foot seems like an architectural feature, until you realize how much it aids in holding and passing.

Smoke Quality

Smoke Quality

The smoke quality is definitely top notch. The diffused downstem is top notch, and at this price,  you should insist on nothing less.

The showerhead leads to thin tendrils of smoke which have maximum contact with the huge amount of water that can fit in the beaker base. The chamber is small, which can be a good thing in a crowd where experience levels are mixed.

The chamber is also perfectly sized for solo smoke sessions…with a catch. The water level required to cover the showerhead is pretty high, meaning that the small volume of the chamber is further reduced if you want to use the piece properly.

The amount of smoke the chamber holds is actually kind of small for an experienced smoker.

Look and Feel

The main thing that this piece has going for it is its looks. The frosted glass is incredibly attractive. The designers chose to place it in an area that stays clean, which is great, because frosted glass which becomes coated in resin looks absolutely disgusting.

It comes in a really attractive box, which is useful for storage, but do not make use of the attached handle. After you remove the tape that holds the box closed, the misaligned handle is a recipe for disaster.

That being said, this thing is great in a group. It’s weight ensures that it is comfortable to hold when loading, and passing. You can set it down without worry that it will tip, and leave it sitting anywhere without worrying that an errant bump against a table will lead to shattered glass.

Ease of Maintenance

Ease of Maintenance

This is not going to be the easiest piece to maintain. Many smokers are surprised to realize that small pieces are often more difficult to maintain than larger ones. This definitely falls into that category.

Residue and debris are going to build up quickly in a small piece. This one in particular has a decidedly small chamber that demands regular scrub sessions.

With a fixed downstem, you’re looking at a tedious ordeal every time. There is no such thing as a shower head diffuser which is easy to clean. Anyone who says otherwise is a liar or a magician. This thing is going to take some care.

This piece is more attractive than useful. I really enjoy the showerhead diffuser, but the fact that it is fixed nearly negates its purpose. Most smokers are never going to be able to keep it clean, so they’re going to end up with a subpar smoking experience, potentially worse than they would experience with a normal downstem.

The Pedro is of moderate quality with attention grabbing features. It’s an attractive piece with a great name behind it. The Pedro has a lot of things going for it, but in a market so saturated, that simply isn’t enough. There are a lot of small, multi-feature water pipes available at this price point, and I would highly recommend that you spend your money elsewhere.
