Hello, all! Today we’re going to have a look at something a little out of the ordinary. With us, we have the Gear Premium Sidekick which certainly is a premium piece with a price tag of almost $150. What makes this pipe stand out, however, is its tiny holder for a lighter built into the base. Despite this being a cool addition—you probably want to know if the pipe stands up to the test so we’ve taken it upon ourselves to try it out for you.

Product Pros

  • Comes in five different accents
  • Has a pretty unique design
  • Hits are great

Product Cons

  • A little too pricey
  • A bit awkward if you’re not used to it

Gear Premium Sidekick Review: Breakdown

With a price tag that is nothing to take lightly, you better believe that this glass is heavy and reassuring. That’s not to say that it won’t break if dropped on your terrace, but it certainly means that it won’t chip, crack or shatter when being washed out with steaming hot water like many cheaper alternatives do.

I’m not going to praise this company any more than necessary for doing something that should be a standard in the industry. If the integrity of materials is a concern for you then this will pose no issues as it’s a solid piece. Another point goes to Gear Premium for the base, it’s pretty heavy allowing the bong more stability when placed on different surfaces.

Smoke Quality

Smoke Quality

A solid ‘meh’ for smoke quality. Although it’s not the best in the world, it’s not overly scratchy either. Put it this way, seasoned tokers won’t have an issue but your friend that partakes now and again might end up coughing and spluttering for a few minutes after a fat rip.

Filtration wise, there is simply nothing to differentiate this bong from any much cheaper glass piece. In fact, I would even go so far as to say that the in-built lighter ‘slot’ reduces filtration due to reduces water space in the chamber—less water equals less filtration.

Look and Feel

When you first put this bong on your table, you won’t be disappointed with how it looks or feels at all. In the shop, there are multiple different colors to choose from so there are no worries in regards to truly personalizing this piece.

As we mentioned before, the selling point of this pipe is its in-built lighter holder to the right side of the base. We’re not quite sure if this is a good thing or even necessary but it certainly is different. Gear Premium insists that you will never lose your lighter again but I just can’t see myself using it.

If there’s one thing that I am good at, it’s losing lighters and after taking a hit from this baby I’m highly unlikely to put the lighter back where it belongs. It also just makes the whole bong a bit more awkward to hold. That being said, I like that it exists and I know that there are those who will both use and enjoy it—I’m just not one of them.

Ease of Maintenance

Ease of Maintenance

Don’t expect a bong with extra bits and bobs to be easy to clean. Pipes that pose the least issues are those with the fewest nooks and crannies but unfortunately, this has a hard-to-reach section at the bottom because of the lighter holder. Is it a dealbreaker? No.

It doesn’t help at all though and could probably lead to some frustration as you tirelessly attempt to scrub residue from the chamber of your lovely new purchase. With that in mind, you should think whether you can bear a section of the bong being permanently stained.

Conclusion

Not that bad. Three words are all it takes to sum up this mediocre bong. We liked what they were going for with the lighter holder but it causes more grief than it does relief plus the price is not justified. For the same price, you could get a bigger bong, with a bigger base and better features for more filtration and craft your own lighter holder on to the side if you really wanted to.

You might be a bit reluctant to drop $150 bucks on this and that is honestly understandable considering all the caveats that go with it but remember—this is a novelty at best. It’s unlikely to cause a trend and there are better ways they could have handled this.
