It’s quite unusual to see Smok take a step back against the growing trend of high powered box mods. The Smok Stick M17 is a pen style vaping device that serves as a throwback to the grassroots of vaping where atomizers where less than 22mm in diameter. Toting a 1300mAh internal battery with a simple and no-frills operation, the Stick M17 is designed with the absolute beginner in mind. The kit comes bundled with a 17mm diameter tank with a 2ml eliquid capacity. Is it still worth getting a mod with such limited capabilities in the world of advanced high-tech box mods? Let’s find out in the review below. Also, check out the Vapesterdam Ultimate Vape Buyers’ Guide to learn about all the e-cigarettes available out there.

Available in 5 simple yet elegant colorways, Smok still offers a good amount of aesthetic variety when letting you select your Stick M17 kit. Color options come in Black, Stainless Steel, Gold, Blue, and a 7-color rainbow variant which I’ve noticed to be Smok’s trademark finish. The finishes seem durable enough but seem to lack any sort of protective coat or powder coat which might not bode well for the M17’s finish in the long term.

The SMOK Stick M17 sports an extremely thin and elongated form factor with a total diameter of only 17mm and a length of 130mm. The ergonomics come very close to that of disposable cigarettes or “cig-a-likes” in the way that its very easy and light to hold. The Stick M17 is one of the lightest kits yet, with a total weight of only 77 grams including the tank. This is especially noticeable when holding or pocketing the device; you can barely tell that it’s there. Despite the lightweight construction, the mod is still put together quite well and manages to evoke a sense of solidness which can be attributed to the high-quality stainless steel design.

Noting the extremely small and thin form factor, its pretty much a given that the M17 doesn’t possess any form of LED display. There’s no need for one since the mod doesn’t have any options for changing the wattage or vaping modes. Found on the main body of the mod is a singular round firing button highlighted by a bright LED indicator. The firing button feels clicky, responsive, and not at all mushy to press.

A simple 5 clicks turns the device on or off accompanied by the LED indicator flashing to notify you of the status change. The indicator flashes 4 times when taking a puff and will flash 15 times when the battery is low enough that the device needs recharging. Recharging is done via the micro USB port found on the body of the mod and while the device doesn’t support 2 amp charging, the 1300mAh battery charges quickly enough.

A spare glass tank comes bundled with the kit which is good to see as the mod is thin and small enough that it might be easily dropped on accident. Aside from the pre-installed 0.6-ohm coil head installed the kit also includes an identical extra 0.6-ohm coil head that should serve as a proper buffer until you spring for additional coil heads from Smok.

While the tank that comes bundled with the kit doesn’t have any adjustable airflow options, I find that the semi-restrictive draw feels ideal for beginners as it seems to be the perfect middle ground between mouth-to-lung and direct lung style of vaping; perfect for the neophyte vapers who haven’t quite figured out what they truly want from their vapes yet.

Unlike the pen-style devices of vaping past, the included tank is easy to refill with Smok’s signature swivel top-fill mechanism which only requires a single push to reveal the portholes for filling the tank up with eliquid.

The tank holds up to a maximum of 2ml and while that might seem inadequate compared to other tanks out there, keep in mind that the included coils paired with the relatively low wattage of the kit will keep your eliquid consumption rather low, so there won’t be much need to refill often.

Flavor production feels a bit average which isn’t that surprising considering the limited options for this device. Still, its a pretty decent vape. Vapor production isn’t anything to write home about either, but for beginners, it should still be enough until the decision to move on to more versatile kits.

The Smok Stick M17 doesn’t offer many options in terms of vaping styles or methods. It’s more of a what-you-see-is-what-you-get type of kit: Press the button and start vaping. So if you’re looking for temperature control or customisable TCR, you definitely won’t be getting any of that from the M17 kit.

That doesn’t mean though that Smok has left the users of this kit in the dark. The M17 still provides a host of safety futures that offer safer and hassle-free experience. The M17 features a low voltage protection that prevents your battery from discharging beyond the safety point, short-circuit protection, and a 10-second cut-off to prevent your coils from burning out in case you forget to turn your device off while it’s in your pocket or bag.

The Smok Stick M17 kit holds one of the slimmest profiles for a device of its calibre, proving to be even smaller and thinner than Smok’s other offerings such as the Stick V8. The slim design makes it simple and easy to slip in and out of bags or pockets although it should be noted that the device is rather long, so it might be a bit obtrusive if you try to keep this in your pants pocket.

The built-in 1300mAh battery manages to hold out for the majority of the day even with medium to heavy use. In case the battery needs charging, the M17 can be easily topped up via any powered USB source, making on-the-go charging a breeze if you have a power bank.

The Smok Stick M17 by Smok is an ideal starter kit for beginners who aren’t looking to explore beyond the basics of vaping. Having said this, I won’t be surprised if you purchase this kit only to upgrade to something more versatile that offers more in terms of vaping styles and options. But for those who want a hassle-free and simple vaping experience, the Stick M17 kit is a solid contender thanks to its reliable performance, small form factor, and utmost ease-of-use.
