Despite its contradictory name, the Source Slim XL succeeds in being both slim and XL. It does a great job of both too. The ‘slim’ refers to its sleek (but still bulkier than other competitors) pen-like shape and the XL refers to its atomizer which holds a massive – wait for it – HALF A GRAM of concentrate. Lastly, it comes with a handy carrying case for when you need to get your vape from A to B with minimal fuss and maximum discretion. Today we’re going to be taking an in-depth look at the new mid-range piece from Source. If you’re looking to explore all your vaporizer options available, we have the Vapesterdam Ultimate Wax Pen Buyers Guide here to help illuminate all the vaporizer choices available to you.

Source Slim XL Review: Breakdown

Build Quality

Build Quality

We’re used to seeing a consistent level of high quality from Source over the years so we were not surprised when we got our hands on the Slim XL Travel. The pen is made of tough, stainless steel 303 which feels cool to the touch when you fire the device up for a session. In the hand, it has a reassuringly weighty feel to it which reminds you what you paid for.

There is one control button on the vaporizer which feels great to click, another little reminder of the quality. Upon first use, you’ll notice how easy and natural it is to use.

There are four airflow settings which are easily accessed by simply twisting the head. It’s intuitive and something we’ve seen on many pens but Source has done a good job in making it feel well-made.

The only issue we have with the way this vape is built is that the LED screen which displays important information such as; temperature and battery – is a little too dark. On a sunny day, you might have to squint to see it.

Vapor Quality

The vapor quality is next to nothing. That is, you’ve assured clouds. The Source Slim XL Travel offers dense vapor as standard. This can be attributed to the huge atomizer which holds 0.5g of wax and if you’re familiar with concentrates, you know that is a significant quantity.

With three distinct voltage settings and two extra large coils, this vaporizer is not going to disappoint. What does this mean? Well, as we said, you will get some pretty wow-worthy clouds but with a quad-coil atomizer, there isn’t really an option to turn this off. With that in mind, this vape is not for the faint of heart and might provide a few too many clouds.

Look and Feel

Aesthetically, the pen simply looks cool. It’s not hard to design a vape with such limited space to work with but as far as they go, the designers did quite well. Smooth, sleek and bulky.

I’m going to go out on a whim here and say that the Source Slim XL’s weakness in design is its greatest strength, Although it is bulkier than many competitors, the device simply feels well-made. Upon opening it, you won’t remove the pen from its box and say,

This doesn’t feel right.’

On the contrary, we think you’ll be very happy.

With it being bulkier than most pens, the Source Slim XL cannot be hidden with as much ease as others but the size difference is not such a big deal. Once you have it in your hand, you realize that although it is large, it’s concealable which shouldn’t draw any attention.

Be aware, however, that the clouds which go along with the giant atomizer might be the cause of some funny looks.

Ease of Use

It couldn’t be easier. One single atomizer which screws onto the top allows you to insert your wax easily. The process is a breeze although a little imprecise due to the larger atomizer size but it’s something you get used to in time. One control button regulates the temperature and you’re off!

You have a few options for this unit. As it comes with a pretty handy carry-case you could neatly pack everything in there and get on your way. You might decide to just carry the pen in your jacket pocket and that’s fine too. The Source Slim XL Travel was designed to be taken with.

Overall this is a great vaporizer for the $119 price tag. If you’re a seasoned vape user then the basic controls will come naturally to you. If you’re new then they are pretty straightforward and don’t take a lot of getting used to. The robust design fits and feels great in the hand, it’s something that reassures you of the quality materials every time you use it. The bigger-than-average quad-coil atomizer delivers a huge punch with thick and rich vapor for all the real cloudchasers among us but this might not be to everyone’s taste.

There are tons of vape pens on the market and some for every budget, you may find it helpful to check out our vape pen section where we review the top devices in the industry. One popular device that may be worth looking into fits most budgets is the Thunder 2.
